Spanish death metal band AVULSED continue their tribute to the pioneers of Scandinavian extreme metal with the release of “Abduction of Limbs”, the third advance single from their upcoming covers album, Nordic Embryogenesis. The track is a reimagining of the song originally featured on Norwegian death metal act OLD FUNERAL’s 1990 second demo of the same name.
The new single is now available on streaming platforms and is accompanied by an official visualizer on YouTube.
According to AVULSED frontman Dave Rotten, OLD FUNERAL‘s second demo had a profound impact on him, describing it as one of the recordings he listened to countless times during the early days of death metal. He praised the band’s distinctive style, noting its unpredictable blend of influences from CARCASS, MORBID ANGEL, and IMMOLATION, while maintaining a uniquely dark and sinister atmosphere.
Dave also highlighted the band’s notable lineup, which included Olve Eikemo—later known as Abbath of IMMORTAL—on bass and vocals. He further pointed out that guitarist Christian Vikernes, who would later become widely known as Varg Vikernes of BURZUM, joined the band for the EP recorded a year after the Abduction of Limbs demo.
Although OLD FUNERAL never released a full-length album, Dave explained that the band reportedly began recording one before abandoning the project. Material from those sessions, along with the band’s demos, EP, and live recordings, was eventually collected into a compilation that now serves as the group’s complete recorded legacy.
Reflecting on the recording process, Dave admitted that adapting “Abduction of Limbs” presented unique challenges due to its unconventional songwriting and intricate instrumental passages. Despite those difficulties, he expressed confidence in the final result, calling it one of the most satisfying covers the band has recorded.

AVULSED will continue unveiling a new track from Nordic Embryogenesis every Friday leading up to the album’s release on September 4.
