Final Gasp have unveiled “Burials of Birth”, a gripping new single and video taken from their forthcoming album New Day Symptoms, due February 27 via Relapse Records. The track distills the band’s nocturnal death rock core, post-punk anxiety, and hardcore urgency into one of their most emotionally resonant moments to date.

On “Burials of Birth”, vocalist Jake Murphy recounts a tragic story from his youth, of a homeless man living off-grid whose tent encampment was burned by police, leading to his death from exposure while trying to rebuild. It’s a stark narrative, told with empathy and distance, that turns personal memory into a wider meditation on loss, displacement, and the limits of control. As Murphy explains, much of New Day Symptoms was written from an outside perspective, imagining alternate outcomes while accepting that the past cannot be changed, only carried forward.
Where Final Gasp’s acclaimed 2023 debut Mourning Moon delivered a concentrated blast of underground death rock, steeped in the spirits of Samhain and Killing Joke, New Day Symptoms expands the band’s palette without losing intensity. The album feels more communal and wide-screen, mapping personal trials onto songs built for shared release, equal parts introspection and rallying cry.
A key factor in that evolution was a more democratic writing process. This time, every idea was on the table, with all members contributing to tones, structures, and textures. The collaborative approach, further amplified by producer Arthur Rizk, allowed Final Gasp to explore new sonic territory while staying rooted in their underground DNA. The result is an album that feels open-ended, alive, and fearless in its honesty.
