GREEN CARNATION Announce A Dark Poem, Part III: The Messiah Complex

Norwegian progressive metal band Green Carnation have announced the final chapter of their ambitious album trilogy, A Dark Poem, Part III: The Messiah Complex, scheduled for release on September 4, 2026 via Season of Mist.

The new album completes a project that began with The Shores of Melancholia and continued through Sanguis, bringing the band’s most expansive conceptual work to its conclusion. According to vocalist Kjetil Nordhus, the trilogy represents the group’s most significant achievement since their landmark 2001 release, Light of Day, Day of Darkness.

“A Dark Poem is by far our biggest achievement since Light of Day, Day of Darkness,” Nordhus said. “Our new album trilogy returns to the epic storytelling that put us on the map back in 2001. While the reception to Part I and Part II has been overwhelmingly positive for us, we do believe that Part III saves the best for last.”

Bassist and principal lyricist Stein Roger Sordal explained that while each installment was designed to function independently, The Messiah Complex serves as the unifying conclusion that brings the trilogy’s themes and narrative together.

The band have also unveiled the lead single, “Unconditional Artificial Chemistry”, accompanied by a video directed and edited by Rikard Amodei. The track combines Green Carnation’s signature progressive songwriting with heavy grooves and explores themes surrounding humanity’s relationship with technology and artificial intelligence.

Drawing inspiration from Shakespearean tragedy, A Dark Poem examines the growing disconnect between personal identity and the modern world. The trilogy addresses concerns surrounding technological dependence, social division, and political uncertainty, themes that reach their culmination on The Messiah Complex.

Nordhus described the accompanying video as a meta-commentary on artificial intelligence, portraying a world where AI gradually corrupts and ultimately replaces human identity. The visual narrative uses AI-generated elements as a storytelling device to illustrate the dangers of unchecked technological influence.

The album will conclude with the 16-minute composition “A Dark Poem – Orchestral Suite”, bringing the trilogy’s overarching narrative to its final resolution.

  2. The Messiah Complex (6:48)

The album will be available in multiple formats, including CD digipak editions, several colored vinyl variants, and a limited-edition A Dark Poem Part I-III box set featuring demos and outtakes.

Green Carnation will support the release with a series of festival appearances and special performances throughout Europe. A highlight of the schedule will take place on September 12 at Kilden Performing Arts Centre in Kristiansand, Norway, where the band will perform the complete A Dark Poem trilogy live in its entirety for the first and only time.

Since their formation in the early 1990s, Green Carnation have established themselves as one of progressive metal’s most distinctive voices, blending atmospheric soundscapes, ambitious compositions, and deeply personal storytelling. With A Dark Poem, Part III: The Messiah Complex, the band bring one of their most ambitious creative undertakings to a dramatic close.
