Portuguese gothic metal pioneers Moonspell have officially announced their new studio album, Far From God, arriving July 3 via Napalm Records. Alongside the announcement, the band has unveiled the album’s first single and title track, offering a powerful glimpse into what they describe as a defining moment in their career.
Framed as their “21st century Irreligious”, Far From God emerges from five years of creative struggle, doubt, and ultimate rebirth. The result is darker, sharper, and emotionally raw, an uncompromising return to the essence of gothic metal: romantic, dramatic, and unapologetically heavy.
The title track, “Far From God”, sets the tone with a haunting exploration of tragic vampiric love, blending dense guitar work, atmospheric keyboards, and the unmistakable voice of Fernando Ribeiro. The song revives the mystique of gothic storytelling, restoring both danger and elegance to the genre’s core themes.
Ribeiro credits renewed inspiration to Robert Eggers’ 2024 reinterpretation of Nosferatu, reconnecting him with the tragic archetype immortalized by Bram Stoker. The result is a track written “in one breath”, channeling a renewed passion for gothic metal’s darker, more poetic roots.
A Gothic Metal Rebirth
Produced by Jaime Gomez Arellano (known for work with Paradise Lost, Sólstafir, and Ghost), Far From God is described as a “black diamond”, both luminous and shadowed, reconnecting with the band’s classic era while sounding modern and vital.
Lyrically, the album explores:
- Baudelairian love and existential guilt
- Redemption and Christ-like resurrection
- Vampires, werewolves, and sacred symbolism as emotional metaphors
Rather than escapism, these elements are used to convey authentic, unfiltered darkness, a deliberate rejection of modern polish in favor of sincerity and depth.

Final Word
With Far From God, Moonspell aren’t chasing trends, they’re reclaiming territory. Positioned as both a statement and a resurrection, the album aims to restore gothic metal’s emotional weight, theatrical darkness, and timeless allure.
Or as Ribeiro puts it:
A crusade against the decline of the style… a gothic metal hallelujah.
