Watch “Tundra, Heart of Hell”
Drawing influence from legendary acts such as Bauhaus, Joy Division, and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, “Tundra, Heart of Hell” showcases a darker, gothic and darkwave-oriented side of Mortiis while maintaining the cinematic atmosphere that has defined his career.
Speaking about the track, Mortiis revealed that the word “Tundra” has appeared repeatedly throughout his songwriting over the years, with earlier versions of the song dating back to the transitional period between the albums The Stargate and The Smell of Rain. The addition of “Heart of Hell” ultimately gave the song greater thematic context and helped shape its final form.
A Creative Liberation
Ghosts of Europa marks Mortiis’ first release for Prophecy Productions and represents what he describes as a creative liberation from genre boundaries and expectations. The album draws upon elements from throughout his diverse career, combining darkwave, electronic rock, ambient textures, industrial influences, and cinematic sound design into a cohesive and deeply personal work.
The album originated as a collaborative concept with Stephan Groth of Apoptygma Berzerk, inspired by the pioneering electronic works of Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze. Although the collaboration eventually dissolved, the project evolved into one of the most ambitious releases of Mortiis’ career.

From Black Metal Pioneer to Dungeon Synth Architect
Before becoming a pioneering solo artist, Håvard Ellefsen was the original bassist for Emperor during the band’s formative years. After departing Emperor, he launched the Mortiis project in 1993, creating a series of influential synthesizer-driven albums that would later help define the dungeon synth genre.
More than three decades later, Mortiis continues to reinvent himself while remaining one of the most enigmatic and influential figures in underground dark music. With Ghosts of Europa, he delivers a genre-defying work that blends electronic rock, darkwave, ambient atmospheres, and cinematic storytelling into what may be one of the most adventurous releases of his career.
