Russian epic metal band SCALD have unveiled “Falcon”, the second single from their upcoming EP, Relics, which is scheduled for release on September 4 via Cruz Del Sur Music.
The five-track EP revisits material from the band’s past, breathing new life into previously unreleased compositions with the addition of new vocalist Hrafn, known for his work with VENDEL. According to the band, Relics marks the beginning of a new chapter while honoring the legacy of late original vocalist Agyl.
Three of the EP’s songs—“Master of Tundra”, “Ravens”, and “Flame”—were written between 1996 and 1997 following the recording of SCALD’s landmark debut album, Will of the Gods Is Great Power. During that period, the band experimented with expanding beyond traditional epic doom metal, drawing inspiration from Norwegian Sámi artist Mari Boine, progressive metal pioneers FATES WARNING and DREAM THEATER, as well as SANCTUARY’s Into the Mirror Black and the distinctive vocals of Warrel Dane.
Although these songs were occasionally performed live over the years, they had never been recorded in the studio until now. The release answers long-standing requests from fans who had hoped to hear official versions of the material.
The newly released single “Falcon” has an especially significant history. Originally written by Agyl between 1991 and 1992 for his pre-SCALD band Ross, the song has been re-recorded as a tribute to the late vocalist. In addition to the English version featured on the EP, SCALD have also recorded “Sokol”, a Russian-language version that reflects the way Agyl originally performed the song.
In a statement accompanying the release, the band thanked fans for their continued support over the years and reaffirmed that SCALD “are beyond politics” and remain focused solely on their music.
