Greek post-metal group Unverkalt continue their descent into darker sonic territory with the release of a powerful new video for “I, The Deceit,” featuring a guest appearance by Sakis Tolis of Rotting Christ.
The track stands as the emotional centerpiece of the band’s latest album Héréditaire, their first release via Season of Mist. Known for their cinematic post-metal soundscapes, the band pushes further into a darker and heavier aesthetic on the new record, trading velvet atmospheres for a blackened intensity.
Critics have already taken note. Dead Rhetoric praised the album in an 8/10 review, writing:
“The contrasting elements at play in Héréditaire, from the gloomy to the raging and the eerie to the explosive, make it a compelling listen that rewards over time. Unverkalt grapple with the emotions and atmosphere with masterful tone and intention.”
The track confronts the quiet cruelty of human indifference, a theme that resonates deeply throughout Héréditaire. According to vocalist Dimitra Kalavrezou, the song examines those who stand by as destruction unfolds around them.
“‘I, The Deceit’ captures the stillness of those who let the world burn, not out of ignorance, but because it serves them.”
Meanwhile, Sakis Tolis praised the collaboration and the band’s creative direction:
“I enjoy discovering new, unique and compelling music in today’s overwhelming world of information, and I believe I truly succeeded with Unverkalt. This is an exceptional piece of art, worth every minute of listening.”
Musically, “I, The Deceit” builds tension through hypnotic melodies and bleak atmosphere before erupting into bursts of blast beats and crushing guitars. Tolis’ unmistakable growls cut through the storm, reinforcing the track’s central theme of contempt for complacency in the face of collapse.
The album marks a significant evolution for Unverkalt, digging deep into themes of generational trauma and inherited suffering.
Guitarist and composer Themis Ioannou explains:
“Our new album is a lament for what is far older than our very existence. It speaks of what seeps through generations, searching for an answer to one pervasive question: What do we carry that was never ours?”
Though the record often dwells in suffocating darkness, moments of fragile beauty still surface. Kalavrezou’s haunting clean vocals provide fleeting glimpses of light amid the chaos — a reminder of the humanity still worth preserving.
