Finnish metal legends Amorphis have unveiled the first single, “Light And Shadow,” from their upcoming 15th studio album, Borderland, set for release on September 26, 2025, via Reigning Phoenix Music. The track opens with an uplifting piano intro and electronic flourishes, evolving into a mythic, driving anthem of self-discovery. Its title serves as a metaphor for the album’s theme of interplay between opposing forces, showcasing Amorphis’ unmatched ability to craft melancholic yet majestic soundscapes.
Keyboardist Santeri Kallio, who composed the music, shares: “I threw my brain into the closet and went with the flow—without stressing about opinions. I didn’t want to repeat the old nor copy what we’ve done before. When I heard Tomi’s final vocal parts, I realized ‘Light And Shadow’ would be the perfect introduction to our new album!”

Recorded at Hansen Studios in Denmark with producer Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Amaranthe), Borderland features artwork by Dutch artist Marald Van Haasteren (Metallica, Black Sabbath). The album’s lyrics, penned by longtime collaborator Pekka Kainulainen, draw inspiration from ancestral struggles and human mythologies, weaving themes of humility and resilience. Kainulainen notes: “Honoring the mythologies of mankind, as well as Amorphis’ listeners, I wrote lyrics that hopefully convey some of the humility and strength that mankind has always depended on.”

For over three decades, Amorphis—Tomi Joutsen (vocals), Esa Holopainen (guitars), Tomi Koivusaari (guitars), Olli-Pekka Laine (bass), Santeri Kallio (keyboards), and Jan Rechberger (drums/percussion)—have pushed boundaries, evolving from their death metal roots (Karelian Isthmus) to genre-defining melodic works like Tales From The Thousand Lakes and Elegy. Recent albums like Under The Red Cloud and Queen Of Time blend their classic sound with fresh innovation. Their 2022 release Halo hit #1 in Finland, cracked Germany’s top 3, and earned two Emma Gaala awards (“Band of the Year” and “Export of the Year”).
Borderland builds on this legacy, offering a meticulously crafted continuation of their recent era while introducing bold new elements. After Halo’s success, the band paused live performances to focus on this chapter, resulting in an organic, visionary opus.
Borderland arrives alongside a major headline tour in Finland and a European arena tour with Arch Enemy, Eluveitie, and Gatecreeper, kicking off in Stuttgart, Germany, on October 10, 2025. Full tour dates and ticket info are available at amorphis.net/tour.
