Portuguese gothic metal legends MOONSPELL have released the lyric video for their latest single, “The Great Wolf in the Sky,” offering fans one final preview before the arrival of their highly anticipated new album, Far From God, due this Friday, July 3, via Napalm Records.
The new track embodies the band’s signature fusion of haunting atmospheres, soaring melodies, and emotional depth. Featuring lush keyboard arrangements, harmonized guitars, and a guest appearance from Alicia Nuhro on strings, “The Great Wolf in the Sky” stands as one of the album’s most cinematic and heartfelt compositions.
Frontman Fernando Ribeiro describes the song as “a shameless ode to the great gig in the sky” while revisiting one of the band’s defining themes—wolves. According to Ribeiro, the song was among the first written for Far From God and evolved over more than three years. Its lyrics reflect on the band’s journey, the friends and companions they’ve lost along the way, and serve as a tribute to a devoted fan who passed away before hearing the new record.
Created over a five-year period marked by introspection and creative rediscovery, Far From God represents a renewed artistic statement for MOONSPELL. Rather than embracing contemporary trends, the band leans fully into the dark romanticism and emotional honesty that have defined its legacy, delivering an album rooted in classic gothic metal while sounding both modern and revitalized.
The record explores themes of existential struggle, redemption, love, mortality, and spiritual symbolism. Speaking about the album’s title, Ribeiro explains that Far From God reflects humanity’s tendency to drift toward superficial pursuits instead of embracing genuine emotional expression through music and art. He describes the album as a creative rebirth, born from years of self-examination and inspired by what he calls a rediscovered muse.
Produced by Jaime Gomez Arellano (known for his work with Paradise Lost, Sólstafir, and Ghost), the album reconnects with the darker spirit of MOONSPELL‘s classic era while delivering a powerful contemporary production.
