New Gods, New Masters, the band’s fifth album with Metal Blade, delivers nine tracks of intense technical death metal, building on the critical acclaim of 2022’s Netherheaven. Davidson credits new members Lannon (since 2023) and Weber for bringing renewed energy, alongside Pearson’s powerhouse drumming. “It’s been a pleasure ripping with those guys,” Davidson says, noting his ongoing focus on refining his guitar, songwriting, and vocal skills.
The album’s title reflects Davidson’s view on humanity’s shift from traditional deities to modern idols like technology and AI. “It seems as if that desire [to worship] is encoded in our DNA,” he explains. “I’ve been very fascinated with the development of Artificial Intelligence, and I’m deeply concerned where this could lead humanity.” Tracks like Cronenberged pay homage to sci-fi horror, inspired by David Cronenberg’s body horror genre and Rick and Morty, depicting a science experiment gone awry. The video, produced by My Good Eye, features gore and practical effects, with Davidson transforming into a tentacle monster.
Produced by Davidson and mixed/mastered by Jens Bogren (The Haunted, Spiritbox), the album boasts guest appearances from Travis Ryan (Cattle Decapitation), Luc Lemay (Gorguts), and jazz guitarist Gilad Hekselman. Artwork is by Paolo Girardi (Bell Witch, Cryptopsy).
