Swedish Gothic Doom Masters DRACONIAN Unveil Second Single “Misanthrope River”

Swedish gothic doom metal band DRACONIAN has unveiled “Misantrophe River”, the second single from their forthcoming full-length, In Somnolent Ruin, set for release on May 8 via Napalm Records.

A signature blend of melancholic atmosphere and crushing weight, “Misantrophe River” confronts listeners with themes of alienation, inner conflict, and the struggle for direction in an unfamiliar world. True to DRACONIAN’s identity, the track merges emotional depth with expansive sonic landscapes, delivering a slow-burning yet immersive experience.

Widely regarded as torchbearers of the second wave of gothic doom, DRACONIAN return with what promises to be one of the most personal and evocative albums of their career. In Somnolent Ruin unfolds across nine tracks as a dreamlike journey, guided by the poetic lyricism of Anders Jacobsson. The album also marks the long-awaited return of vocalist Lisa Johansson, whose voice defined the band’s earliest era.

Anders Jacobsson on “Misantrophe River”:

“‘Misanthrope River’ was the first song written for this album… It’s an emotional gothic doom track—fairly minimalist, yet expansive in feel, with subtle touches hinting at post-metal. At its core, it deals with separation and isolation in a world where the larger truth has been kept from you… You’re pushing against the current, doubting the way forward, grasping for peace while unintentionally shutting out the one closest to you.”

The accompanying music video, filmed in the stark and breathtaking landscapes of the Faroe Islands, was directed by Gaui H., further amplifying the track’s sense of isolation and grandeur.

In Somnolent Ruin continues DRACONIAN’s legacy of crafting immersive doom soundscapes layered with poetic introspection. Since their 2003 debut Where Lovers Mourn, the band has refined a signature sound that balances ethereal beauty with crushing heaviness, inviting listeners into deeply emotional and introspective realms.

Six years after their critically acclaimed Under a Godless Veil, the band returns revitalized. The lineup now features guitarist Niklas Nord, returning vocalist Lisa Johansson, and drummer Daniel Johansson as a full-time member, alongside core members who continue to shape DRACONIAN’s evolving identity.

From the haunting opener “I Welcome Thy Arrow” to the myth-inspired closer “Lethe”, In Somnolent Ruin navigates themes of existential doubt, emotional isolation, and transcendence. Tracks like “The Monochrome Blade” and “The Face of God” inject urgency and dynamic intensity, while “Cold Heavens” delivers one of the album’s most powerful vocal performances.

“Misanthrope River” stands as a centerpiece, balancing restraint and atmosphere while reflecting life’s relentless struggles. Meanwhile, “Lethe” closes the album with a descent into mythological oblivion, invoking the river of forgetfulness and the desire to escape memory itself.
