Dutch vocalist and songwriter CHARLOTTE WESSELS has announced the upcoming release of Mute Swan Empire, the second full-length studio album with her band, now officially known as THE OBSESSION. The 15-track record arrives February 5, 2027, via Napalm Records, with physical pre-orders available now.
Following 2024’s The Obsession, the former DELAIN frontwoman returns with an ambitious, character-driven concept album exploring humanity’s responses to environmental collapse, social injustice, and an increasingly uncertain future.
Each track represents a different archetype emerging at the end of the Anthropocene, examining reactions ranging from denial and complicity to anger, isolation, hope, and connection.
Wessels explains how the concept developed:
“I didn’t set out to write a concept record from the start, but somewhere along the way, I began to realise that all the latest songs I’d written were connected. Each of them seemed to embody a different response to the world we’re living in: Denial, complicity, withdrawal, blind obedience, selective empathy, but also hope and connection, and so on.”
She continues:
“I didn’t want an album that simply points fingers or offers easy answers. I wanted to explore the contradictions, the uncomfortable grey areas, and the possibility that we can change.”
A Concept Inspired by the Swan Song
The album’s title draws inspiration from the legend of the swan song, the belief that a swan sings its most beautiful melody just before death.
Through Mute Swan Empire, Wessels questions whether humanity, facing ecological and societal collapse, will have the opportunity for a final moment of beauty or redemption.
Musically, the record expands upon the combination of heavy metal, alternative influences, cinematic arrangements, and intimate songwriting established on its predecessor.
The album also marks a significant evolution in the band’s identity. Having developed a strong musical connection through extensive touring, the musicians behind The Obsession have officially adopted the name THE OBSESSION, emphasizing their increasingly collaborative approach.
Produced by Wessels and Joost van den Broek at Sandlane Recording Facilities, the album features additional orchestral and keyboard arrangements by Vikram Shankar, with cellist Elianne Anemaat contributing to several tracks.
Guitarist Timo Somers also played a major role in the arrangements and recorded the album’s bass parts.
Literature, History, and Personal Reflection
Beyond its central concept, Mute Swan Empire draws inspiration from literature, poetry, and historical writings.
“In Leta Via” incorporates words by medieval mystic Hildegard von Bingen, while “The Hermit Song” references Julian of Norwich. “One Day They Will Come For You” takes inspiration from Martin Niemöller’s postwar reflection First They Came, and the closing track, “Bells Of Lynn,” incorporates fragments of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem of the same name.
The album also includes “Emergency Kit,” featuring text from the Dutch government’s Denk Vooruit public preparedness campaign.
Several compositions originated through Wessels’ ongoing Patreon project, where she has released new music monthly since 2020. Among them is “Incantations,” initially shared with supporters in March 2024 and now presented in a newly arranged version.
