DEATH ANGEL release new single “The Never Was” ahead of European and Australian tours

Bay Area thrash metal veterans DEATH ANGEL have released their new single, “The Never Was,” accompanied by an official lyric visualizer. The track arrives through Nuclear Blast Records as the band prepares for upcoming performances across Europe and Australia, along with their annual holiday shows in California.

The new song follows the band’s 2025 singles “Wrath (Bring Fire)” and “Cult of the Used,” continuing a series of standalone releases following their 2019 studio album, Humanicide.

Built around fast-paced guitar riffs, aggressive rhythms, and vocalist Mark Osegueda’s distinctive delivery, “The Never Was” maintains the thrash metal approach that has defined DEATH ANGEL throughout their career.

“The Never Was” takes aim at self-absorbed behavior

According to Osegueda, the song addresses individuals who consistently redirect attention toward themselves, regardless of the circumstances or the people involved.

The lyrics explore narcissistic behavior, particularly the tendency to turn conversations, personal tragedies, and even the accomplishments of others into opportunities for self-promotion.

Osegueda explained:

“Lyrically it’s inspired by self centered people that feel the need to make every conversation, tragedy, including someone else’s success or even death all about themselves.”

The vocalist also pointed to social media as an environment where this behavior has become increasingly visible, allowing individuals to publicly present their opinions and experiences while repeatedly making themselves the center of attention.

Osegueda described the song’s inspiration through an unexpected comparison to Carly Simon’s 1972 hit “You’re So Vain.”

“This song is basically the Thrash Metal bastard spawn of ‘You’re So Vain’ by Carly Simon.”

He added that the lyrics were inspired by actual individuals who, in his view, are unlikely to recognize themselves as the subjects of the song.

The accompanying lyric visualizer features original drawings and video production by Tamara Llenas of Aimed & Framed. The single’s cover artwork was created by Mark Richards.

Continuing the legacy of Act III

The release coincides with DEATH ANGEL‘s ongoing celebration of the 35th anniversary of their third studio album, Act III.

Originally released in 1990 through Geffen Records, the album marked an important development in the band’s sound, combining their established thrash metal foundation with more melodic arrangements and varied songwriting.

Songs including “Seemingly Endless Time” and “A Room With A View” received MTV exposure and helped introduce DEATH ANGEL to a broader audience.

The band launched an anniversary tour in 2025, performing Act III in its entirety alongside selected material from the rest of their catalog.

The celebration continues with European performances in December 2026 and Australian dates in early 2027.

European tour and annual holiday shows

DEATH ANGEL will begin the European leg of their Act III anniversary tour on December 1 in Brno, Czech Republic.

The run includes performances in Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Denmark before concluding December 13 in Hamburg.

Following the European dates, the band will return to California for their 11th annual Another Death Angel Xmas Show celebrations.

Two performances are confirmed:

  • December 17, 2026: Los Angeles, CA, 1720
  • December 18, 2026: San Francisco, CA, The Fillmore

In January 2027, DEATH ANGEL will bring the Act III anniversary tour to Australia, beginning with an appearance at Froth & Fury Festival in Adelaide.

Additional shows are scheduled in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane.

More than four decades of Bay Area thrash

Formed in Daly City, California, in 1982, DEATH ANGEL emerged from the Bay Area thrash metal movement alongside a generation of bands that helped establish the genre internationally.

Their 1987 debut, The Ultra-Violence, introduced the band’s technical guitar arrangements and fast-paced compositions, followed by Frolic Through the Park in 1988 and Act III in 1990.

After reuniting in 2001, the band returned to recording with The Art of Dying (2004) and continued releasing albums including Killing Season (2008), Relentless Retribution (2010), The Dream Calls for Blood (2013), and The Evil Divide (2016).

Their most recent full-length album, Humanicide (2019), earned a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance.

With “The Never Was,” DEATH ANGEL continue releasing new material while revisiting one of the most significant albums in their catalog through their ongoing anniversary performances.
