Scottish atmospheric black metal project SAOR has premiered its upcoming album, Caledonia, ahead of its November 6, 2026, release through Season of Mist. The complete recording is now available to stream on YouTube, offering listeners an early opportunity to hear five re-recorded compositions from the project’s first three albums.
Led by composer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Andy Marshall, SAOR revisits material originally released on Roots, Aura, and Guardians. Rather than remastering the existing recordings, Marshall has reconstructed the compositions with updated arrangements, performances, and production.
Spanning approximately 51 minutes, Caledonia brings together material that has evolved through years of rehearsals, live performances, and touring.
Revisiting the early years of SAOR
The decision to re-record these compositions reflects Marshall’s desire to revisit the material with the experience and resources available to him today.
While the original songs established SAOR‘s combination of atmospheric black metal and traditional folk instrumentation, the new recordings expand upon their arrangements and dynamics without abandoning their original identities.
Tremolo-picked guitars, atmospheric passages, and black metal vocals remain central to the music, accompanied by traditional instruments including tin whistle, uilleann pipes, and violin.
Marshall explained his approach to the project:
“Having previously revisited older material through remasters and remixes, this was the first time I could fully reimagine these songs with the benefit of years of experience, stronger performances, and a clearer artistic vision. It felt less like looking backwards and more like completing a circle. The songs carry the same emotions and inspiration, but they now reflect the SAOR that exists today.”
The recordings reflect how the compositions have developed since their original releases, incorporating changes in performance, arrangement, and atmosphere that emerged as the songs became part of SAOR‘s live repertoire.
For Marshall, Caledonia represents an opportunity to realize aspects of the music that were not fully achievable during the recording of the project’s earliest albums.
Traditional instrumentation and guest musicians
Marshall performs vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, and atmospheric pads throughout Caledonia, in addition to handling the compositions.
The album also features contributions from several guest musicians who help develop its folk and atmospheric elements.
Drummer Carlos Vivas provides percussion, while Ella Zlotos contributes female vocals, tin whistle, low whistle, and uilleann pipes. Violinist Àngela Moya Serrat adds string arrangements to the recordings.
Together, these contributions reinforce the combination of black metal instrumentation and traditional musical influences that has characterized SAOR‘s sound.
Caledonia available November 6

Caledonia will be released through Season of Mist on November 6, 2026, in digital and physical formats.
The physical editions include a CD digipak and double gatefold vinyl, available in standard black, black-and-white marbled, and opaque orange-and-black marbled variants.
The complete album stream is available now through the official Season of Mist YouTube channel, with preorders and pre-saves also open.
By revisiting five compositions from Roots, Aura, and Guardians, SAOR presents a new interpretation of its early catalog, reflecting the musical development of Andy Marshall and the project’s continuing connection to Scottish heritage and atmospheric black metal.
