Chester, England-based cinematic/progressive metal quintet Disconnected Souls have released their new single, “Spectral”, featuring guest vocals from Jessie Powell of Dream State. The track, accompanied by a visually striking music video crafted by JWA Creations, is the first single from their forthcoming sophomore album, following their 2024 debut Fragments of Consciousness. Produced by JJ Catalyst (Mothica, Hollywood Undead) with mix assistance from Andrew Castillo, and mastered by Ruairi O’Flaherty (Lana Del Rey, Paramore), “Spectral” blends catchy hooks, heavy riffs, high-octane electronics, and a dynamic vocal interplay between Powell and the band’s vocalists.

Vocalist Patrick Lloyd explains the lyrical theme: “The lyrics of ‘Spectral’ are about how society lends itself to isolation and overwork, preventing us from living our lives in a purposeful and healthy way. The Japanese term ‘karoshi’ comes to mind. As far as I can see, this is only getting worse with time, so we need to make changes, and fight back against our fates, before we fade away.”

Vocalist and bassist Felix King adds: “‘Spectral’ was a behemoth of a project which took over our lives for a few months. We wanted something amped up with a wide, synthy sound, and got stuck into making it fun to listen to. I love the layered harsh vocals and the back-and-forth between Pat and Jessie, who absolutely brought the cool to this one. She was great to work with, and being a bit of a musical airhead, my bandmates’ excitement introduced me to her music! It’s also my first time doing bass for DS, so I poured my heart into it.”

“Spectral” showcases Disconnected Souls’ genre-bending approach, fusing progressive metal with cinematic textures, classical elements, and electronic flourishes. The track features guest drums by Cam Booth (Writhe, Valeway), additional composition by Dan Williams, and artwork/photography by Tom Lloyd with makeup by Lu Lloyd (The The Alt MUA). Powell’s soaring cleans and screams, known from Dream State’s Untethered (2023) and Still Dreaming (2024), complement the band’s layered harsh vocals, creating a thrilling vocal dynamic.

Formed in 2018, Disconnected Souls—Matthew Simon Fletcher (“Fletch”) (guitars, keys, bass, clean vocals, programming), Holly F. Royle (guitars, vocals, keys), Patrick Lloyd (vocals, programming), Felix Luca King (vocals, bass, synths, programming), and Tim Jenkins (synths, keys, programming)—craft a distinctive sound exploring themes of human disconnection and societal rifts. Their 2020 EP Warring Elements and singles like “Deluge” led to the critically acclaimed Fragments of Consciousness (2024), praised by Metal Injection as “epic, synth-heavy, and catchy” and Powerplay Magazine as “brave, bombastic, and bloody brilliant” (10/10). Their 2024 EP Endless Winter set the stage for their 2025 chapter.
