Long Island crossover thrash/hardcore band EXTINCTION A.D. have released their new single “Escape From L.I.,” marking the band’s eighth new track in as many months.
Available now across digital streaming platforms, “Escape From L.I.” arrives alongside a new lyric video and finds the band addressing the growing social division and hostility they see within their Long Island home. The track also incorporates Spanish-language vocals and Latin percussion into EXTINCTION A.D.’s established blend of thrash metal and New York hardcore.
Singer and guitarist Rick Jimenez explains:
“Long Island has become such a cesspool for obnoxious attitudes and disgusting displays of hate and division. I grew up here and was aware of this my whole life but over the past few years it’s gotten even more out of hand.”
Jimenez says the song reflects the difficulty of watching a familiar place become increasingly hostile while emphasizing the importance of confronting hatred within one’s own community.
“Seeing your home area turn into a vile environment is tough. Standing against it, calling it out and letting your neighbor know that hate isn’t acceptable is important.”
“Escape From L.I.” also marks the second EXTINCTION A.D. song on which Jimenez sings in Spanish.
“I am still not fluent under any circumstance but I am learning,” he says. “Flexing those muscles a bit more on this song particularly was gratifying and felt appropriate.”
That experimentation extends beyond the vocals. The band incorporated additional Latin percussion into its crossover foundation, including elements influenced by bomba and reggaeton.
“Switching between English and Spanish throughout the song and complimenting that with some more auxiliary Latin percussion was super cool. A tinge of bomba flare and a bit of reggaeton flare thrown into a thrash metal/hardcore hybrid felt crazy on paper but perfect in practice.”
Eight singles in eight months
“Escape From L.I.” continues an especially prolific period for EXTINCTION A.D., becoming the eighth single released by the band over the past eight months.
The run also includes “They Live, They Die,” “Center Of Zero,” “Truth and Consequences” featuring Incendiary guitarist Brian Audley, “Thaw,” “Dead Men Running,” “Blood Hoax” and “Insomnia.”
Together, the tracks showcase the band continuing to develop its combination of thrash, extreme metal and hardcore more than a decade into its career.
Formed on Long Island following the members’ time with THIS IS HELL, EXTINCTION A.D. have built their sound around the intersection of ’80s thrash metal and ’90s hardcore. Since forming in 2013, the band has developed a reputation for aggressive live performances, heavy riffing and socially focused lyrics.
Previous releases through labels including Good Fight and Unique Leader have further established the group within the modern crossover scene, combining elements of East Coast thrash, New York hardcore and extreme metal.
