Canadian death metal band Last Retch, formed in 2021 in Hamilton, has released the single In the Polder They Reek from their upcoming third album Abject Cruelty, set for release on September 26, 2025, via Time to Kill Records. The track, streaming with a lyric video on YouTube, encapsulates the band’s evolving sound with tight grooves, stomping riffs, and a fierce vocal performance, wrapped in an oppressive atmosphere.
Described as a masterclass in restraint and impact, it blends Bolt Thrower’s melodic sensibility with Cannibal Corpse’s hammering intensity, culminating in a rare melodic solo and a sludge-drenched final riff inspired by Crowbar, written spontaneously in the studio. The lineup—Finlay Blakelock (vocals), Derek Brzozowski (guitar), John Russell (guitar), Matt Fyke (bass), and Spencer Robson (drums)—delivers no-frills death metal shaped by Hamilton’s industrial decay and social collapse. Abject Cruelty, following Sadism and Severed Heads (2023) and Ergotism EP (2024), offers eight tracks of concise, hook-driven aggression.
