More than four decades into their career, MAYHEM return with their seventh full-length album, further cementing their status as one of the most uncompromising and influential forces in extreme music. Liturgy of Death is a stark meditation on mortality, confronting death not as an ending, but as an inescapable and defining law of existence.
Across the album, death is portrayed as a constant presence that exposes the fragility of human life. This impermanence becomes a provocation to live with intensity and clarity, as all gains and losses ultimately dissolve into the same silence. Drawing from ancient philosophical ideas, Liturgy of Death frames life as a temporary state and death as a passage into something beyond, with its dark, solemn beauty permeating every moment of the record.
“Life Is a Corpse You Drag” stands as one of the album’s most direct and unsettling statements. Vocalist Attila explains the meaning behind the track:
“‘Life Is a Corpse You Drag’ is not a slogan, but a ritual and a realization. It names an ancient law: consciousness as burden, the body as vessel, faith as a seal on a grave already closed. There is no comfort in this recognition, but there is release. If we have been dead all along, there is nothing left to lose. What remains is pure energy: movement without fear, presence without compromise, a victorious march into the final destruction.”
With Liturgy of Death, MAYHEM focus their long-honed fury into a record that is dark, fast, and unrelenting. The album reflects both the band’s storied legacy and their continued relevance, channeling the raw spirit that defined their early years while sounding as dangerous and vital as ever.
The album features contributions from a lineup locked into peak form, including Necrobutcher, Hellhammer, Attila, Ghul, and Morten Bergeton Iversen. Together, they deliver a merciless and focused work that celebrates MAYHEM’s past while pushing relentlessly forward.
