Independent black metallers PROFANE ELEGY returns with “I Am”, The track marks the band’s first release from their forthcoming full-length album Herezjarcha, set to arrive in January 2026.
Watch “I Am” now:
Drawing from the biblical exchange in the Book of Exodus, where Moses demands the name of God and receives the cryptic response, “I am that I am”, PROFANE ELEGY transforms the passage into a manifesto of self-determination.
What was once divine revelation becomes human defiance. Fueled by searing riffs, thundering drums, and Mikael L’s commanding vocal performance, “I Am” stands as both a personal statement and an existential cry of freedom.
“It’s not an act of submission,” says the band. “It’s reclamation—an anthem for anyone who’s ever had to fight a battle they didn’t choose.”
Formed in 2021 in Bangor, Pennsylvania, PROFANE ELEGY began as a two-man studio project between guitarist J Gulick and vocalist Mikael L, before expanding into a full four-piece lineup with bassist David G and drummer Sean M. Despite members being split between Pennsylvania and New Jersey, the band forged their sound through relentless remote collaboration, countless files exchanged, ideas refined, and late-night discussions that ultimately shaped Herezjarcha.
Their debut album, When All Is Nothing (2023), introduced a striking fusion of atmospheric black metal and doom-laden emotion, earning praise for its intensity and nuance. The upcoming Herezjarcha, produced by J Gulick and mastered by Kevin Antreassian (Backroom Studios), pushes the band’s sonic and conceptual boundaries even further, blending black, death, doom, and progressive metal with deep philosophical exploration.
The title Herezjarcha (Polish for Heresiarch, or “arch-heretic”) reflects the record’s spirit: rebellious, introspective, and unafraid to challenge the sacred. Each song delves into themes of nihilism, faith, mortality, and self-sovereignty, continuing PROFANE ELEGY’s mission to turn spiritual conflict into art.
