Canadian blackened death/doom band Witherer has released “Solar Collapse Mandala,” the lead single from their debut full-length album, Shadow Without A Horizon, set to drop on June 20, 2025, via Hypaethral Records. The track premiered yesterday, May 14, 2025, and is now streaming on Bandcamp. Pre-orders are available at the Hypaethral webshop and Bandcamp, with the album offered on CD (ltd. 300), digital formats, and 2xLP (100 Subterranean Blue vinyl, 200 Black vinyl).
Formed as a one-man project by Tiamoath (vocals, guitars, bass, songwriting, keyboards, bells), Witherer evolved into a trio with Øhrracle (vocals, guitars) and Hex Visceræ (drums). After an unreleased demo and their 2019 single “Milk Sea (Bathing In Its Waves),” the band spent years crafting Shadow Without A Horizon, shifting from atmospheric black metal to a punishing blackened death/doom sound. The album, recorded primarily by Roland Rodas at Cavern Of Echoes Studios and Matt Hems at Seventh Level Sound, with mixing and mastering by Rodas, features guest appearances by T. G. on “Praises” and M. Adem on “Devourer Of All Graveyards” and “Solar Collapse Mandala.” Artwork and layout are by Danille Gauvin.
“Solar Collapse Mandala,” a 7:02 track, is described by the band as “an uncompromising purgation, a funeral pyre whose flames writhe above and beneath dying stars,” blending oppressive doom atmospheres with ferocious black/death intensity. The album’s five tracks, including “Fiat Umbra (Burial Beneath The Stalactites)” and “The Wailing Hours (Plummeting Under The Tunnels),” explore themes of mortality—intensified by the band members’ personal brushes with death during its creation—delivering a cathartic, hour-long memento mori, as Tiamoath calls it. Fans of bands like Thou, Primitive Man, or early Esoteric will find Witherer’s mix of suffocating heaviness and dreamlike soundscapes captivating.
