Winnipeg death metal band Defenestration have released their sophomore EP, Rotting Antefix, through Iron Fortress Records. Available now on vinyl, CD, cassette, and digital formats, the six-track offering further develops the band’s blend of ancient mysticism and old-school death metal brutality.
Building on the foundation established by their earlier material, Rotting Antefix immerses listeners in a world of cavernous riffs, haunting lead guitar melodies, and oppressive low-end grooves. The EP embraces a raw yet atmospheric approach, combining relentless aggression with evocative storytelling rooted in history and mythology.
The record’s conceptual framework was inspired by guitarist and vocalist Ben Neufeld and his travels through Greece, where ancient temple carvings and religious iconography sparked ideas that would shape the EP’s lyrical direction.
Drawing from those experiences, Rotting Antefix explores themes of forgotten civilizations, sacred symbolism, hidden forces lurking beneath the surface of history, and darker concepts of corruption, condemnation, and eternal purgatory. The result is a work that pairs classic death metal savagery with an immersive sense of ancient dread.
The EP was recorded and mixed by Ryan Nash before being mastered by Andrew Oswald. Visual elements play an equally important role in the release, with artwork created by Rotting Head, logo design by Hidris, and photography by Jordan Friesen, reinforcing the record’s bleak and timeless aesthetic.
