New York hardcore pioneers CRO-MAGS have unveiled a newly recorded version of their classic track “It’s The Limit,” featuring guest guitarist Meg Mills. The song is taken from the band’s upcoming album, The Age of Quarrel: 40 Years of Quarrel, scheduled for release on November 13, 2026, via BLKIIBLK.

The reimagined track, titled “It’s The Limit (2026),” arrives alongside an official lyric video and offers a fresh interpretation of one of the defining songs from the band’s influential 1986 debut, The Age of Quarrel.

Mills, whose work has established her as a notable guitarist in the contemporary hardcore scene, expressed her excitement about contributing to a record that helped shape her musical journey.

“(This is)…the greatest honor that could ever have been bestowed upon this NYHC fan. Wouldn’t have ever started a band without this record… Grateful to be a small part of this,” Mills shared, adding that Harley Flanagan remains one of her greatest influences.

Celebrating 40 years of a hardcore landmark

Originally released in 1986, The Age of Quarrel helped establish CRO-MAGS as one of the most influential bands in the emerging crossover movement, combining the raw aggression of New York hardcore with the power and precision of thrash metal.

Four decades later, founding bassist and vocalist Harley Flanagan is revisiting the landmark album with a collection of newly recorded versions featuring an impressive lineup of musicians connected to the band’s past and present.

Joining Flanagan on the project are original The Age of Quarrel guitarist Doug Holland, former CRO-MAGS and SUICIDAL TENDENCIES guitarist Rocky George, and guest musicians Meg Mills, Zach Blair, and Arthur Rizk.

Current band members Dominic Dibenedetto and Dave Sharpe also contribute, while acclaimed drummer Greyson Nekrutman performs on every track.

The album was produced and mixed by Arthur Rizk, known for his work with POWER TRIP and BLOOD INCANTATION.

Rather than simply recreating the original recordings, The Age of Quarrel: 40 Years of Quarrel aims to capture the intensity and spirit of the material while introducing the songs to a new generation of hardcore and metal fans.

The 16-track release features re-recordings of classics including “We Gotta Know,” “World Peace,” “Hard Times,” and “Malfunction,” alongside the addition of the 1985 demo-era track “Everybody’s Gonna Die.”

The story behind the re-recordings

The idea to revisit The Age of Quarrel emerged during the production of the documentary Wired for Chaos, which explores Harley Flanagan’s life and musical career.

Because the original recordings could not be licensed for the film’s soundtrack, several songs had to be recorded again. What began as a practical solution eventually evolved into a complete re-recording of the album.

The project also addresses longstanding financial and ownership disputes surrounding the original release.

According to Flanagan, the musicians who performed on The Age of Quarrel never received payment or a proper accounting of the album’s sales.

For years, he attempted to reunite the original lineup to re-record the material and pursue ownership rights to both The Age of Quarrel and Best Wishes through copyright reversion provisions. However, those efforts did not come together before the relevant opportunity expired.

The new recording represents an opportunity to recognize the musicians responsible for creating the material while celebrating its enduring legacy.

According to the album announcement, songwriters will receive payments through ASCAP and BMI, with remaining proceeds going to charity.

For Flanagan, the project represents more than an anniversary celebration. It is an opportunity to honor the music, acknowledge its creators, and move beyond decades of conflict.

Four decades of New York hardcore

Founded by Harley Flanagan in 1981, CRO-MAGS emerged from New York City’s underground punk scene and became instrumental in shaping the crossover between hardcore punk and heavy metal.

Flanagan began developing the band’s earliest material as a teenager while performing with THE STIMULATORS. By the mid-1980s, the group had evolved into a formidable force within the city’s hardcore movement.

The influential 1985 demo featured Flanagan alongside guitarist Parris Mayhew, vocalist John Joseph McGowan, and drummer Mackie Jayson. The following year, guitarist Doug Holland joined for the recording of The Age of Quarrel.

The album’s combination of aggressive hardcore rhythms, metallic guitar work, and confrontational songwriting helped establish a blueprint that would influence generations of musicians across punk, hardcore, thrash, and extreme metal.

Despite numerous lineup changes and a frequently turbulent history, CRO-MAGS have remained an important presence in heavy music for more than four decades.

With The Age of Quarrel: 40 Years of Quarrel, Harley Flanagan and an assembled group of musicians are bringing one of hardcore’s most influential albums back into the spotlight, celebrating its legacy while giving its songs renewed life.
