Devin Townsend Unveils Ambitious New Album The Moth, Out May 29

Canadian progressive metal visionary Devin Townsend has revealed details of his ambitious new album The Moth, set for release May 29, 2026. The project marks one of the most expansive works of Townsend’s career, a 24-track conceptual release more than a decade in the making.

Rather than a stylistic shift, Townsend describes the album as a culmination of ideas that have been evolving throughout his entire discography, built from the ground up as a large-scale orchestral, choral, and theatrical production.

A Decade-Long Vision Comes to Life

Townsend first conceived the idea for The Moth over ten years ago, calling it his “life’s work”. The project began to take shape roughly six years ago when members of the Noord Nederlands Orkest approached him after an acoustic performance in Amsterdam about incorporating orchestral arrangements into his music.

Rather than revisiting existing material, Townsend chose to channel those resources into an entirely new creative undertaking, transforming the long-gestating concept into a fully realized project.

The Concept Behind

At its core, the album explores internal transformation and self-confrontation.

According to Townsend, the narrative follows a protagonist confronting deeply ingrained behaviors and internal conflicts that have long gone unexamined. Through reflection and acceptance, the character ultimately undergoes a profound personal transformation.

Townsend describes the central metaphor:

“The most obvious metaphor for change within the concept of this project was a moth: from caterpillar to an entirely different creature – one so drawn to the light that it burns itself away. What remains is immutable – only the spirit.”

Three Listening Experiences

The Moth will be presented through three different formats, each offering a unique perspective on the work:

  • The Moth – the main 24-track narrative album
  • The Moth – The Afterlife – a version emphasizing the orchestral and choral arrangements
  • The Moth – The War – a live recording of the album’s debut performance in the Netherlands in March 2025

A Massive Collaborative Effort

Townsend assembled an extensive lineup of collaborators for the project.

Core band members

  • Darby Todd
  • Mike Keneally
  • James Leach

Guest musicians

  • Steve Vai
  • Anneke van Giersbergen
  • Lynn Wu

If Townsend’s previous conceptual works are any indication, The Moth could stand as one of the most ambitious progressive metal releases of the decade.
