GATES OF KIEV Announce Self-Titled Debut Album, Release “Hamlet Burns” Single

Dutch progressive rock trio GATES OF KIEV have announced the release of their self-titled debut album, Gates Of Kiev, arriving October 2 via The Laser’s Edge. Alongside the announcement, the band has unveiled the album’s lead single, “Hamlet Burns,” giving listeners a first taste of the group’s blend of vintage progressive rock and modern psychedelic influences.

Founded in the Netherlands by childhood friends Tomas Mesman (organ) and Hessel Braat (drums), GATES OF KIEV grew out of late-night hard rock jam sessions before evolving into a progressive rock project inspired by the classic sounds of the 1970s. The lineup was completed after meeting bassist Eszl De Vois, whose background in the underground psychedelic and jazz scenes helped shape the band’s distinctive musical identity.

Drawing significant inspiration from Emerson, Lake & Palmer, the band took its name from the legendary composition “The Great Gates of Kiev,” featured on the group’s live album Pictures at an Exhibition. While rooted in classic progressive rock, GATES OF KIEV also incorporates influences from contemporary garage rock and punk, resulting in energetic performances built around lengthy instrumental passages, shifting dynamics, and storytelling compositions.

Their debut album features four expansive tracks spanning approximately 40 minutes. Recorded independently by the band, Gates Of Kiev was mixed and mastered in Norway by Jacob Holm-Lupo of White Willow, while the album artwork was created by Italian heavy psych illustrator Mont Doom.

Speaking about the lead single, drummer Hessel Braat described “Hamlet Burns” as a dramatic composition inspired by the stark landscapes of the Dutch winter.

Hamlet Burns is a dramatic, ecstatic song inspired by the scenery of barren fields in Dutch winter. The music and lyrics follow a journey of loss, deep experience, and transformation—almost as if portraying the unfolding of destiny within a human life.”

Gates Of Kiev will be released on LP, CD, and digital platforms on October 2, with additional singles and live performances expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
