GREEN CARNATION have unveiled “The Messiah Complex”, the second single from their forthcoming album A Dark Poem, Part III: The Messiah Complex, due out September 4, 2026 via Season of Mist. The track arrives as the latest preview of the Norwegian progressive metal band’s ambitious trilogy, which concludes a story that began with The Shores of Melancholia and Sanguis.
According to vocalist Kjetil Nordhus, the new album represents one of the band’s defining achievements since their landmark 2001 release Light of Day, Day of Darkness.
“A Dark Poem is by far our biggest achievement since Light of Day, Day of Darkness. Our new album trilogy returns to the epic storytelling that put us on the map back in 2001. While the reception to Part I and Part II has been overwhelmingly positive for us, we do believe that Part III saves the best for last.”
Bassist and primary lyricist Stein Roger Sordal explained that “The Messiah Complex” explores humanity’s tendency to shift responsibility for its own actions.
“The title track from Part III of A Dark Poem is about our need to find external excuses for our behavior. This is nothing new, but with our uncritical way of working with our increasingly digital world, we seem unable to cope with the consequences of our actions.”
Nordhus also highlighted the chemistry behind the song, praising guitarist Bjørn Harstad, drummer Jonathan Perez, and Sordal’s contributions as key elements that elevate the track while maintaining the unmistakable GREEN CARNATION sound.
Serving as one of the trilogy’s centerpiece compositions, “The Messiah Complex” blends progressive rock, orchestral arrangements, and heavy riffs into an existential journey inspired by Shakespearean tragedy and modern societal anxieties. The song explores themes including technological dependence, political power, social division, and the human search for external saviors, ultimately tying together the broader narrative of A Dark Poem.
The album’s complete story culminates with a 16-minute orchestral suite, making Part III the final chapter in the band’s expansive conceptual work.
A Dark Poem, Part III: The Messiah Complex will be available in multiple formats, including CD, several deluxe vinyl editions, and a limited-edition colored LP box set collecting all three parts of the trilogy along with demos and outtakes.
Following the album’s release, GREEN CARNATION will perform a series of hometown shows and European festival appearances. A special performance at the Kilden Performing Arts Centre in September will feature the band performing A Dark Poem in its entirety for the first and only time, with fans from 18 countries already securing tickets for the event.
