Mental Health for Metalheads: Rock Your Way to Wellbeing Brings Therapy, Heavy Metal, and Humor Together

A new self-help workbook created specifically for hard rock and heavy metal fans is set to arrive this summer. Mental Health for Metalheads: Rock Your Way to Wellbeing combines evidence-based therapeutic approaches with the language, imagery, and attitude of heavy music culture, offering mental health guidance tailored directly to metalheads.

Written by a registered nurse with lived experience of mental illness and fact-checked by a licensed psychiatrist, the book incorporates techniques and principles from therapies including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT).

Rather than presenting mental health advice through conventional self-help language, the book reframes therapeutic concepts using metal culture, humor, and references familiar to fans of heavy music. Chapter titles and subheadings are inspired by metal songs and bands, effectively turning the book into a companion playlist alongside a mental health workbook.

The cover artwork was created by legendary thrash metal artist Ed Repka, whose iconic illustrations helped define classic albums including Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying?, Rust in Peace, Leprosy, and Scream Bloody Gore. Interior artwork was handled by artist John Cowan, known for work connected to Bam Margera.

The release also features a foreword by psychologist and author Dr. Scott Eilers, with an afterword contributed by Dr. Kate Quinn of Heavy Metal Therapy and Leif Munkelien of Metalheads Against Bullying.

Importantly, 50% of the author’s profits will be donated to The Sophie Lancaster Foundation, a UK-based charity dedicated to challenging prejudice and intolerance against alternative subcultures.

The book underwent a beta reading process involving metal fans with experiences of neurodivergence and mental illness, including contributors connected to Rock N Roll Children and Grab A Stack Of Rock.

The official blurb states:

“Inner-peace sells, but who’s buying?”

The book argues that while themes of depression, despair, and emotional struggle are common throughout rock and metal music, much of the traditional self-help industry fails to speak directly to fans immersed in heavy music culture.

Mental Health for Metalheads: Rock Your Way to Wellbeing will release in hardcover on June 1, 2026, followed by Kindle and paperback editions on July 1, 2026.
