NOCTERIS Unleash Symphonic Black Metal Darkness With “Spellbreaker”

Portland, Oregon symphonic black metal band NOCTERIS continue their exploration of darkness, mythology, and transformation with “Spellbreaker,” a cinematic track built around the struggle to break free from a curse and reclaim control over one’s fate.

Formed in 2024, NOCTERIS features vocalist and bassist Samantha Russell (Thirsting Altar, Vela Pulsar), drummer Victor A. Camarena (I Am Ghost, Incarpathia), and guitarist/orchestrator Matt Bellmore (Terminal Dusk). Drawing influence from Dimmu Borgir, Death, Nightwish, and Emperor, the trio combine extreme metal with theatrical orchestration and emotionally charged storytelling.

“Spellbreaker” follows a narrator who has spent years living beneath the weight of a curse. Images of smoke, chains, fire, blood, and ruined years run throughout the song as desperation gradually turns into defiance. The narrator is prepared to call upon gods once rejected and sacrifice whatever is necessary to finally sever the darkness attached to them.

That theme fits naturally alongside NOCTERIS’ previous material. Throughout 2025, the band released “Medusa (Crowned in Flame),” “The Void Beyond,” “Fleshbound Devotion,” “Echoes of Rebirth,” and “Neither Human Nor Beast,” songs that explore mythology, supernatural horror, grief, vengeance, and transformation. The band also delivered a symphonic black metal reimagining of Lady Gaga’s “Abracadabra.”

The accompanying “Spellbreaker” video, produced by Abstract Chaos Design, extends the song’s dark-fantasy atmosphere through gothic imagery, ruined cathedrals, angelic statues, fire, and shadow.

With “Spellbreaker,” NOCTERIS continue developing a sound and identity where symphonic scale meets the aggression of extreme metal, using supernatural storytelling as the foundation for something distinctly personal.
