German extreme metal band OBSCURITY have revealed the title track from their upcoming tenth full-length album Ascheregen, due out on January 29th, 2026 via Trollzorn Records. Alongside the announcement, the band has premiered an official lyric video for the song, now available to watch here:
Following the release of their previous album “Skogarmaors”, OBSCURITY underwent significant line-up changes, marking a new chapter in the band’s long-running history. These shifts are clearly reflected on Ascheregen, which combines fresh musical elements with the band’s established strengths. Led by founding member Agalaz, the current line-up pushes relentlessly forward, delivering an album driven by intensity, conviction, and evolution.
Musically, Ascheregen continues OBSCURITY’s signature blend of melodic death metal and Viking metal, now sharpened with a pronounced black metal edge. This added aggression enhances both the melodic depth and the overall ferocity of the material. As a result, the album moves stylistically closer to earlier releases such as “Tenkterra” and “Vintar”, while maintaining a modern and refined approach.
Songwriting on “Ascheregen” shows a clear step forward, with more mature and fully developed structures throughout the album. One standout moment comes with the track “Rúnar Víg”, where OBSCURITY welcome a special guest appearance from Erik Grawsiö of Månegarm. A longtime friend of the band, Grawsiö adds an unmistakable epic presence to the song, performing his guest vocals entirely in German and elevating the track to one of the album’s defining highlights.
Lyrically, “Ascheregen” unfolds as a dark conceptual journey spanning past and present. Across twelve chapters, from the ominous opener “Initium Dekadentiae” to the closing track “Dystopie und Schwanengesang”, the album weaves together Old Norse mythology, the violent legacy of Christianization, and the fractures of the modern world. At its core, “Ascheregen” stands as both lament and defiance, offering a critical reflection on societal decay while calling for resistance against conformity and ideological subjugation.
The album was produced by Tim Schuldt together with OBSCURITY at 4CN Studios. Cover artwork was created by Jan Yrlund of Darkgrove Design, completing the album’s dark and immersive vision.
