Canadian one-man atmospheric black metal project SAKNA will finally see the release of its long-lost magnum opus, De Syv Dødssynder, on October 31st, 2025 via Hypaethral Records. Alongside the announcement, the label has unveiled a powerful new stream: SAKNA’s doom-laden cover of Windir’s Sóknardalr.

Formed in 2006 by the late Canadian multi-instrumentalist Solemn, SAKNA has remained shrouded in mystery for nearly two decades. His brother, S. (of post-metal band Lunedi), has now brought Solemn’s hidden works into the light, painstakingly recovering old recordings and overseeing their restoration alongside Greg Dawson (Thantifaxath, Panzerfaust) at BWC Studios. The result is a hauntingly complete vision that fuses the epic traditions of Windir’s Sognametal with atmospheric black metal, DSBM, funeral doom, neo-folk, and dark ambient textures.

Inspired by Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy, Solemn began writing De Syv Dødssynder in 2006 at just 14 years old, handling all vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards, organs, and drums. By 18, he had completed the recordings, even previewing “Del I – Helvete” on YouTube in 2009, which quickly gained underground recognition. Tragically, Solemn passed away in 2011, leaving the music unreleased — until now.

“It’s surreal to think that a musical project my brother began at 14 will finally get a proper release in 2025,” shares S. “De Syv Dødssynder will forever be his musical legacy, and what a legacy he has left us.”

In tribute, Hypaethral has also unveiled SAKNA’s cover of Windir’s Sóknardalr. Retaining the epic spirit of Valfar’s vision while adding a doom-laden weight and orchestral grandeur, the track highlights how deeply Windir influenced Solemn while showcasing his ability to forge a sound uniquely his own.

S. notes: “This cover shows how SAKNA developed its own artistic voice — distinct, yet true to its roots. I hope Valfar would approve of such an epic and heavy interpretation.
