Tarja Turunen Announces New Album Frisson Noir — Her Heaviest Yet

Symphonic metal icon Tarja Turunen is set to release her brand new studio album, Frisson Noir, on June 12, 2026 via earMUSIC, and it’s being described as the heaviest record of her career.

After years of exploring classical, rock, and crossover territories, Tarja makes a bold statement: she’s firmly rooted back in metal.

A Cinematic & Heavy Sonic Identity

Frisson Noir blends cinematic orchestration, classical influences, and modern, guitar-driven metal intensity into a cohesive and immersive sound, where sweeping arrangements and heavy riffs collide to create a powerful, emotionally charged listening experience.

At the core is Tarja’s unmistakable voice, shifting effortlessly between fragile emotion and operatic power, surrounded by choirs, orchestras, and layered instrumentation that move between darkness and light.

The album dives deep into themes of identity and transformation, fear and resilience, nostalgia and defiance, and a profound sense of belonging and independence, weaving them together into a reflective and emotionally resonant narrative.

The lead single, “At Sea”, is out now and perfectly captures the album’s essence, what Tarja describes as the “frisson”, that physical shiver when music and emotion collide.

Recorded with the Budapest Art Orchestra and Choir, the track merges:

  • Heavy guitar foundations
  • Orchestral grandeur
  • Live performance energy

It reflects the tension between fear and determination when facing the unknown, one of the album’s central emotional threads.

Across its 10 tracks, Frisson Noir features an impressive lineup of guests, including:

  • Dani Filth (Cradle of Filth)
  • Apocalyptica
  • Marko Hietala (ex-Nightwish)
  • Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers)

The album is mixed by GRAMMY-winning producer Neal Avron, known for work with Linkin Park and Disturbed.
