MERRIMACK Unleash Ferocious Depeche Mode Cover Of “Wrong”

French black metallers MERRIMACK have released a new take on Depeche Mode‘s “Wrong,” available now through Season of Mist. Originally written by Martin L. Gore and featured on Depeche Mode‘s 2009 album Sounds of the Universe, the reimagined track clocks in at 2:59 and is available exclusively on digital platforms.

Rather than reinventing the song, MERRIMACK set out to expose the darkness they always believed was at its core. According to guitarist Perversifier, the idea stemmed from his long-standing admiration for Depeche Mode’s later catalog, which he says “only grew better over the years.” He describes “Wrong” as a composition that “already carried more darkness than even Black Metal rarely reaches.”

Interestingly, the project has been more than a decade in the making. The instrumental tracks were recorded during the sessions for The Acausal Mass at Necromorbus Studio in 2012 before being shelved. Only recently did the band return to complete the recording by adding vocals and preparing it for release.

Perversifier explains that the band’s goal was to remain completely faithful to the original composition, preserving every note while injecting “the level of violence that Black Metal can bring.” The result transforms Depeche Mode‘s cold, mechanical sense of despair into something far more visceral without sacrificing the song’s underlying structure.

The standalone release follows MERRIMACK‘s acclaimed 2024 album, Of Grace and Gravity, which continued the band’s three-decade tradition of uncompromising black metal and reaffirmed their commitment to pushing the genre’s boundaries.

MERRIMACK’s version of “Wrong” is streaming now on all major digital platforms, while Of Grace and Gravity is available through Season of Mist.
